Changing WordPress Themes
The Five Contestants
I tried AndyBlue 1.3, but I dont like the way it deals with <h3> heading tags. It shows no respect for them except for making the text larger in fontsize, and jams them togehter with the rest of the paragraph text, no spacing! And oh yes, my SPA plugin didn’t work in this theme. I discarded it.
Ocean Mist 1.1 looks cool, and I like the large picture header, but there seems to be a problem with real-estate: the main content pane is rather narrow so you’ll have a hard time displaying pictures or videos wider than 250 pixels. Althought the author proffered a solution, a file-renaming procedure of some sort, I was not ready to start hacking right then. Also, the categories are listed (mixed up with link categories! Thanks, WP2.1) at the bottom of all pages, and you will have to scroll all the way down to get there.
Silver Lexus 0.9e looks really snazzy, with dropdown child-pages, and lots of real-estate. It has 3 columns and a liquid layout (somebody say Holy Grail!), it’s also SEO optimized. It has a newspaper look and feel to it. I like the picture of the lexus on the header, but it’s not unusual enough for me. And SPA works here. Fonts are a little big, though. i think i like this one.
Tiga 1.0.2 gave me a little problem at setup, because I thought the CSS file styles.css was missing and I almost gave up on it. I later discovered that the stylesheet was supposed to be generated by a php file on-the-fly (that’s a new one!). You can customize almost all the style features via an options panel in the theme manager. I also noticed that it is widget ready, and has lots of space too. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Adsense, yeah!
The sexy Unnamed-One SE 0.5 is the snazziest! It looks and is shaped like the Kubrick theme which comes as default with WP, but it has almost all its functions ajax-ified, complete with a sliding drawer for your navigation links, LiveSearch and Ajax commenting! I was dying slowly of delight here! It’s just a pity it has only 2 usable columns. My SPA plugin works here too, showing previews of people’s sites, lol (I am beginning to use SPA as a generic test for the is_single() template problem), so I can choose it. I think i’m in love…
Now i’m torn - I have to choose between between real-estate and efizzy. I need a three-column design, but i want that Ajax drawer… Oh dear, I guess by the time you read this post you will know which one I settled for. I might still change my mind.
