Running a small business can be tricky, you cannot hope to compete with volume shops on price and a lot of times you do not get the tax breaks the bigger business do get. What can help you however is that even in “brick and mortar businesses”, it is becoming increasing easy to get the technology advances used by much bigger competitors to achieve cost cutting, have time and most importantly speed up your supply chain.

First thing I see is 182 HD stations in Florida, a lot of which are new country music stations and oldies, which I love. Sounds cool. Hey, does Alabama have any? But more importantly…how much does it cost?? Oh my goodness! Did i just see a $5000 yamaha home theater? Och! My eye!! My eye!! Car radio updates start from $150. That’s a pretty penny.

I just have to vent on several products that are simply giving me nightmares in installation and maintenance, and the surprising thing is this is really pricey software, with prices ranging from 10k to 100k usd for an unlimited number of licences on a single network, but before i go into the problems i had with it (and a sensor with an 80 percent failure rate) let me describe an incredibly embarrassing incident that occured to me.

I think my Access Point is dead. And that is a BIG deal. One of my clients called on Saturday afternoon to say she couldn’t access the internet. After describing the problem, i concluded a cable had slipped again.

I came to the office to meet a total disaster: the Ethernet LED on the AP was not on. Which meant there was no data. Which meant the AP was off! (it uses Power-over-ethernet). The equipment was made by Demarctech, a Reliawave RWV 802.11a/b/g Access Point/Bridge. It was mounted at the top of an 80ft mast (phew!). And now i have to climb. The day is particularly windy, and my heart is in my mouth as i move from rung to rung on the rather narrow mast.

I resumed work today to find that my Pc wouldn’t stay on for more than a few minutes, after which it would just freeze. At first I started blaming windows again, and I decided to reinstall the OS (I didnt have any apps on the PC yet, anyway). The install process froze at the filecopy stage (deja-vu, the Windows XP bluescreen post!)

In a rage, I took apart the chassis, intending to remove the offending - or so i thought - harddisk, only to smell burnt-plastic near the processor. The processor isn’t plastic, is it? And the heatsink is made of metal (duh!), so i took a look at the fan. Sure enough, it was the culprit. It had either malfunctioned and got overheated, or something else. I put on the PC again, this time with the cover open,

My new laptop arrived on Wednesday last week, but I only got to start using it on Friday. It’s a spanking new Packard Bell EasyNote R0422, and I’m almost dancing around the thing with joy.
